The ancient Greek scholar Archimedes is said to have built the earliest known hoisting device around 236 BCE, using a combination of ropes and pulleys as its power source, with people or animals pulling the rope to lift loads. This pulley-based, force-saving principle became the foundation for hoisting mechanisms for thousands of years afterward, and is the earliest prototype of today's elevator rope and traction sheave systems.
In 1852, Elisha Otis designed a "safety hoisting device" for factory use: if the lifting rope broke, a pawl would automatically engage the ratchet teeth on the side of the guide rail, preventing the platform from falling. In 1854, at the New York Crystal Palace Exhibition, he personally stood on the platform and cut the rope in front of a crowd — the platform dropped only a few inches before the safety device caught it. This demonstration gave the public its first confidence in "riding an elevator" and marked the starting point of the modern elevator industry.
In 1857, Otis installed a safety elevator in a five-story department store in New York for customers to travel between floors — the first commercial passenger elevator ever opened to the public. This elevator was still steam-powered, but it already had the basic form of a modern elevator carrying passengers between floors, shaping the design thinking of multi-story buildings for decades to come.
In 1880, German engineer Werner von Siemens unveiled the world's first elevator driven by an electric motor at the Mannheim exhibition, replacing earlier steam or hydraulic power sources. Electric drive greatly improved efficiency and stability, and gradually took elevators from a niche feature of a few large buildings to much broader use in commercial and residential buildings.
After years of research, the Otis Elevator introduced a gearless, traction-driven electric system in 1902, formally installed in a New York building in 1904. This technology replaced traditional gear transmission with friction between the traction sheave and the ropes, greatly raising the achievable speed and travel height, making the construction of skyscrapers possible and gradually replacing hydraulic elevators.
From the 1970s onward, microcomputer control systems gradually replaced traditional relay logic, enabling elevators to achieve group control dispatch and unattended automated operation. Since the 2000s, machine-room-less (MRL) elevators and IoT-based monitoring technology have been introduced, using sensors to transmit operating data in real time and helping predict component wear and anomalies — now the mainstream direction for elevator technology.
